Mark Shayler - You Can’t Make Money On A Dead Planet

The fact is, as Mark Shayler points out, sustainability is good for business, and it is essential that we build businesses that do not step beyond the natural boundaries of our environment.

The entire drinks industry, and by association the global hospitality industry, is at enormous risk from climate change, water insecurity, and catastrophic biodiversity loss. In 2021, beverage companies accounted for a staggering 4% of all global CO2e emissions!!!

And we’re only cutting emissions at a rate of 0.7% per year, which puts drinks companies way off-track to meet their net-zero targets. The rate of carbon reduction needs to improve 11-fold.

Our warming climate shifts growing conditions for crops towards the poles (just ask the folks in Champagne), droughts and floods are now commonplace and hail and unseasonal frosts regularly devastate crops.

In 2024, the Global Environment Facility estimated that 95% of the world’s land could become degraded by 2050 and the UN warned that 40% of it already is. All drinks start their life in the soil, whether in a field, orchard, or vineyard. If the soil is degraded, then crops can’t grow.

The good news is that nature is incredibly resilient and as soon as we stop cutting it down, killing it, or poisoning it, nature rebounds with remarkable speed.

The simple fact is that if our industry is to thrive then we must reject business as usual thinking and adopt a long term strategy with urgency of action and work together with nature, with farmers, and with each other so we can turn the tide of destruction and protect our businesses and our future.
